Here is what it looked like originally. It had lovely simple lines and the legs and the base was solid timber. Unfortunately the water damaged chipboard top, and old plastic handles weren't doing it any justice!
The first thing I did was pull out the drawers and look up at the underside of the tabletop. I could see the top was simply screwed in with two screws, which I removed. While the tabletop was off, I lightly sanded the whole piece and oiled it. (Oiling is my favourite technique for timber furniture because I love the slightly worn, less glossy feel when compared to a traditional varnish).
I used the old top as a pattern to cut a new piece of 16mm thick MDF. After a coat of primer, I gave this two coats of oil (enamel) paint in a soft cream.I added two new handles from Anthropologie (ceramic cream roses) and voila, all finished!
This table is always receiving new vignettes and is one of my favourite pieces in the house.
