A hall table makeover

A while ago I did up an a little hall table that used to be my grand mothers. It had a swollen, damaged chipboard top with old plastic handles, but the table itself was solid timber with simple, pretty lines.

Here's what I started with...

When I pulled the drawers out I found the top was held down with small nails from underneath which were easy to rip out because the chipboard was so rotten. Once I had the top off I gave the whole thing a really good wash with a light soapy solution before rinsing it off with water.

Then I sanded it down with a fine grit sandpaper. It was already in good condition so it didn't need anything more than a touch up.

Finally, I stained it with 'Walnut' stain by dipping some fine steel wool into the stain and rubbing it in. After it had sat there for 5-10 minutes I rubbed it down vigorously with a soft cloth.

To make a new top, I measured the original top and bought a 16mm thick piece of MDF from the hardwore store which would suit and cut it to size. I primed it with Taubmans 3 in 1 primer and then gave it two coats of semi-gloss enamel paint in a creamy colour (can't remember the colour name).

I did have two rather pretty knobs I bought from Anthropologie in the States last year (shaped like cream roses) but they went missing in the move so I used another set I have which I bought at the same time. Hopefully the others will turn up eventually!

Here's the end result...

(Sorry for the blurry terrible photo - I don't have a decent camera at the moment. Also, check out our origial lemon yellow walls which are now a blue-grey colour, still have to add skirting too!)
